An alternative Image
Identity is a main word these days. Everyone is hardly trying to find his/her own identity. This is also recognized by myself. I’m also trying to explore my own identity by clothing, way of speaking, etcetera... Many people are looking for a ‘me’ while fitting in the society. But that is hard. And if you take a look at the music industry, this is also a common thing. Alter egos sometimes are musicians their saving plan…
It is Jelte
I saw this happen with big stars, like Lady Gaga for instance. But here in the Netherlands we also have one, named Jett Rebel. This 23 year old artist his real name is Jelte Tuinstra. He has always known that he wanted to become a singer/songwriter. He had always played in little local band, before he grew bigger. But as a shy person he was, getting in the spotlight, was nerve-racking. So Jett Rebel was born!
Jett Rebel
While Jelte is making music in his own little home, Jett Rebel is a stage animal during concerts. With nail polish on, lipstick, earings… And as I saw in the doc ‘Who the fuck is Jett Rebel’, the difference between Jelte and his alter ego is like day and night. When music is written in his home, he is a true perfectionist. When something goes wrong he loses it, leaving him nervously walking around in his house, with shaky hands. And the other moment he climbs on stage at big festivals like Paaspop, he is over confident and rocking the stage.
A protection
I believe that Jett Rebel has been born because of Jelte being damaged by his history. “I more like to be Jett Rebel than Jelte Tuinstra, Jelte doesn’t exist for me anymore.” (Jett Rebel, Doc). And I also believe that, many people are having these kind of problems. If you ask me, I think it’s a very cool and new way to create an alter ego to overcome insecurities. By doing that, an identity is given to you. And in case of the bullied Lady Gaga and the insecure Jett Rebel, it has helped them built on their secureness. It brought them much success.
The desire to be someone else
I strongly believe that more and more people will create an alter ego. Having so much competition these days, it is hard to show your real identity. If you put on make-up, nail polish, a wig and other stuff to cover up, one can hide their insecurities and do things they normally don’t. Their trust will rise and therefore their Quality of life too..
I suggest you al to watch the documentary ‘Who the fuck is Jett Rebel. In this video is shown how big the difference can be between a real person and it’s alter ego.
But to achieve your dreams, creating one can be the solution I guess.
