The Real toy again
I still remember my sister, aged 15 years old, playing with barbies a lot in her younger years. And I also remember that these Barbie’s used to have elegant clothes and dresses. But just as in the real world, these barbies have evolved into picture perfect models. Everything about them is perfect till the edge. They are thin, they have curves, they have got make-up on. Maybe this is up for a change, if you have ever heard about the trend ‘Imperfection is perfection’.
To perfect
Artist Sonia Singh has been watching the change of these barbies. And with her kids playing with this ‘to perfect’ dolls she grew a feeling against them. Following her opinion, we all need to realize that the trend of perfection has also found a way into the toy world. The Australian mom came up with an idea to make a statement.
The Make-over
Frustrated by this trend, the Tasmanian Sonia went to a local thrift shop with a desire to find Bratz that in her opinion were in need of a big make under. When she had found the perfect candidates, she turned back home and began with de-painting, re-conditioning and re-dressing the little models. This make-over gave Sonia lots of attention. The 21st of January this ‘little’ make-over became trending news. The difference is remarkably big. She is turning the terms imperfection and perfection back the other way around.
Imperfection is happening
This little campaign is a following to the support of a positive and real body image. With the ‘normal’ dolls Sonia is feeding the trend of imperfection, which I think is necessary. Kids mimic a lot from their parents but also from their environment. Little girls playing with the perfect doll will gain a wrong image about how a human body should look like. This can cause a lot of self-a-steam issues growing up.
The natural look is back
I have said it a few times now, Imperfection is back. And that will make us feel better about ourselves. Kids will grow up with realistic dolls and other toys. They will picture a natural image of beauty about themselves. Growing up will be less stressful. They are going to be more satisfied about how they look, instead of children from the past generation.
Maybe this make-under of Bratz is an example for a lot of companies. Filling the world with naturalistic material, just like the old days, will be a lift up for many people. Lets imperfect yourself.
