The eco city farm
I’m getting more and more conscious about food. I definitely want to know about what’s on my diner plate more than ever. And we all do. Nowadays, people need transparency about what their food is made of, if the animals have been threaten well and if our food itself is threaten well.
Losing sight
During the last few decades, maybe centuries, people have lost sight on the countryside. In the middle ages the city was built around these countrysides. One used to see how their food was produced. But time flew by and the countryside was driven to the edges of the city. And now we are not connected with the countryside at all, which means that we have lost knowledge about how our food is made…
Grow your own
The blogpost I wrote during the sector Health was about de vegetable garden around the corner in my city district. Because of companies not giving all the information about our food – and us forgetting what real food is - people more and more want to grow their own ‘Healthy’ veggies. In the Farm Shop in London, people can buy vegetables which are plucked just a few hours before.
The device
The next step is to combine this city farming with sustainability. And that’s what they are doing in Rotterdam. ‘Uit je eigen stad’ is an organization that uses the poo of Tilapia and Catfish to grow their lettuce. And the fish itself will be transported to restaurant to make dishes with. It is a system which drives continually. The water is filtered by the poo. The poo is the nutrition for the lettuce and the water will be guided back to the fish tanks.
Sustainability, transparency
Sustainability at its top. And this has huge growth potential. We are connecting with the countryside again. People want it fair trade. Organizations like ‘Uit je eigen stad’ are as transparent as possible. The employees will show the fish tanks to people who are interested. The lettuce fields and the mushroom cabins are also on the tour. How do they do it?!
